2.1 Relationship to the Sproxil Terms of Service

These Terms of Use supplement the Sproxil, Inc. Terms of Service published at sproxil.com/terms-of-service (the "Parent Terms"). The Parent Terms apply in full to your use of snms.malariadata.net (the "Site"), except as supplemented below. Where any provision of this supplement conflicts with the Parent Terms in connection with this Site, this supplement controls.

By accessing or using this Site you agree to be bound by the Parent Terms together with these supplemental Terms of Use.

2.2 Purpose of this Site

This Site publishes aggregated findings, methodology, and supporting documentation from the Sproxil Nigeria Malaria Survey (SNMS). The Site is operated by Sproxil, Inc.

2.3 Permitted use of aggregated content

The aggregated estimates, charts, maps, and tables displayed on this Site are made publicly available for non-commercial research, public health policy, education, journalism, and related uses. Subject to the citation requirement in Section 2.4 and the restrictions in Section 2.7, you may extract individual displayed values and incorporate them into your own work.

Commercial use of Site content (including but not limited to incorporation into a paid product, paid service, advertising, or any context where the user of your derivative work is required to pay you for access) requires prior written permission from Sproxil, Inc. Direct commercial use requests to: snms@sproxil.com.

2.4 Citation requirement

Any publication, presentation, report, dashboard, blog post, or derived analysis that uses values displayed on this Site must include the canonical SNMS citation published at /methodology-and-faq. For peer-reviewed publications, in addition to citing the Site, a copy of the publication should be sent to snms-research@sproxil.com for inclusion in the SNMS reference library. This deposit requirement follows established practice in the survey-data publishing community, including the DHS Program.

2.5 Microdata access (future provision)

Respondent-level SNMS microdata is not published on this Site at present. If microdata access becomes available in the future, it will be governed by a separate SNMS Data Use Agreement that includes, at minimum, the following provisions modelled on the DHS Program's terms:

  • Registration of the intended research use and approval of a specific project scope.
  • A confidentiality undertaking, including secure storage and access controls.
  • A prohibition on any attempt to re-identify any individual, household, or enumeration area.
  • A prohibition on redistribution of microdata to third parties without written consent.
  • A prohibition on commercial use without separate license.
  • A deposit of resulting publications to the SNMS reference library.
  • A commitment to use the data only for the approved project.

When the SNMS Data Use Agreement is finalized it will be linked from /methodology-and-faq and from this Section 2.5. Until that link is published, no microdata access is authorized under these Terms.

2.6 Re-identification prohibited

You agree not to attempt, directly or indirectly, to identify any individual respondent, household, or sub-LGA geographic unit from any content displayed on this Site or from any analysis derived from that content. This obligation applies regardless of whether identification is technically feasible and continues after your use of the Site ends.

2.7 Restrictions

In addition to the restrictions in the Parent Terms, you specifically agree not to:

  • Engage in automated scraping, systematic harvesting, or bulk extraction of Site content without prior written consent.
  • Represent SNMS estimates as biomedical malaria prevalence. Authoritative biomedical prevalence in Nigeria remains the Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey (NMIS).
  • Remove, obscure, or modify source attribution, citation requirements, watermarks, disclaimers, or limitations of liability when redistributing extracted values.
  • Interfere with the security, availability, or integrity of the Site.
  • Use the Site or its content in any manner that violates the NDPA 2023, the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, or any other applicable law.

2.8 Disclaimers and limitations

Site content is provided "as is" and "as available" for public-health research transparency. Without limiting the disclaimers in the Parent Terms:

  • SNMS estimates are derived from an engaged, mobile-phone-using respondent population, which is not a random sample of the Nigerian population.
  • Headline values are unweighted and describe the engaged population the survey reaches. For comparison with national surveys, the calibrated values and the per-indicator verdicts apply. Calibration reduces but does not remove this engaged-population selection.
  • For decisions requiring nationally representative biomedical prevalence, the authoritative reference remains the NMIS. SNMS complements but does not replace the NMIS.
  • This Site does not provide medical, clinical, or diagnostic advice. Individuals concerned about malaria infection should consult a qualified healthcare provider.
  • The full reasoning, including why no wealth reweighting removes the engaged-population selection, is set out in the methodology.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Sproxil, Inc. and NMEP disclaim liability for any decisions made on the basis of Site content where those decisions did not also rely on authoritative sources such as the NMIS, NMEP guidance, or a qualified healthcare provider.

2.9 Intellectual property

All SNMS data, analyses, visualisations, and content displayed on this Site are owned by Sproxil, Inc. All rights are reserved except as expressly licensed under these Terms.

2.10 Governing law and dispute resolution

The Site is operated from Nigeria and the United States. Disputes specific to the SNMS data, methodology, or content displayed on this Site are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Parent Terms govern all other matters of choice of law and dispute resolution.

2.11 Updates

These supplemental Terms may be revised from time to time. Material changes will be announced on the Site homepage for at least 30 days following publication. Continued use of the Site after the effective date of any revision constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
